The Design Awards Program The AIA Maryland Design Awards competition occurs each year in July, with recognition
of winning built and unbuilt projects at the Design Awards program in September. AIA Maryland celebrates the design accomplishments of architects in Maryland with this annual event. The program is open to
individual members and firms whose principals are members of AIA Maryland and honors designs in a variety of categories. The Design Awards program aims to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural
achievement and focus public attention on the Architect's role in shaping the quality of life through design excellence.

The AIA Maryland Design Awards program recognizes excellence in architectural design by Maryland architects worldwide and for work in Maryland. The purpose of the awards
program is to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural achievement and to honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to improve the built
environment and for their role in shaping the quality of life through design excellence. A panel of distinguished architects from AIA North Carolina will review project entries to determine
the best in architecture in Maryland, or outstanding achievement in design by AIA Maryland member architects. Entrants should prepare their submission as a comprehensive chronicle of their
design intentions and processes.

Eligibility
Participation is open to AIA Maryland members who are licensed in the state of Maryland for projects located anywhere in the world and to AIA members from other states who are
licensed in Maryland for projects located in Maryland. There is no limit to the number of projects that may be entered by a firm and all materials included in project submissions must
be cleared for public reproduction. Entries must be submitted by the Firm of Record, or the Architect of Record.
Eligible projects include:
- Projects designed by AIA Maryland members built anywhere in the world. (Exception: Public Building of the Year project must be located in the State of Maryland.)
- Projects built in Maryland designed by AIA Members from other states who were licensed to practice in Maryland at the time of the project’s completion.
- Projects must have been completed after July 1, 2004 and not having previously received an award from AIA Maryland

AIAMD Members: $125 for each project entry Other AIA Members: $300 for each project entry **
(Entry fees are non-refundable, but may be deferred to a future program)
** Please note that as of September 2008, AIA Maryland no longer offers unassigned membership to
assigned members of other AIA components. Therefore, if an AIA Maryland local chapter is not a participant’s assigned AIA chapter, then “Other AIA Members” fees apply.

July 22 Board submissions must be received by 5:30 p.m. at the AIA Maryland office, Nine State Circle, Suite 202, Annapolis.
*IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR MEMBERS SUBMITTING DUAL PROJECT(S) TO AIA BALTIMORE RESIDENTIAL AWARDS AND AIA MARYLAND DESIGN AWARDS:
Please follow these procedures for your dual submission(s):
- Mark the indicated space on the AIAMD Conditions of Submission form that your project is also being submitted to the AIABaltimore Residential Competition. Also note
this somewhere on the AIAMD and Baltimore Entry Forms (there is no check off for it; please note it to the left of the project name).
- Submit all required AIAMD Submission Documents and CDs to the AIAMD office by the board submission deadline of July 22 – 5:30 pm. These may be mailed. In other
words, send AIAMD all of the items required by the 7/22 due date EXCEPT the physical board.
- Submit all required Baltimore Residential Submission Forms and CDs (adhered to the back of the project board as instructed in the guidelines) to the AIA Baltimore office on
its due date of July 23. AIA Baltimore will transfer all dually-submitted project boards to the AIAMD offices directly after the Baltimore Residential design judging is completed.
Jury
A panel of distinguished architects from AIA North Carolina will review project entries to determine the best in architecture in Maryland and outstanding achievement in design by
AIAMD member architects. The criteria used by the jury include quality of design, resolution of the program idea, sustainable responsibility, innovation, and technique. Entrants should
prepare their submission as a comprehensive chronicle of their design intentions and processes.

2009 AIA Maryland Student Design Award Competition

ENTRY DEADLINES:

AIA Maryland, state component of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), is pleased to announce its third annual Student Design Awards competition. The purpose of the program is
to promote architecture in the State of Maryland and to build a relationship between AIA Maryland and the academic community. This program is part of AIA Maryland's annual design
award program held each fall. Eligibility is limited to students who were either residents of Maryland enrolled in a NAAB accredited architectural degree program, or who were non
-residents enrolled in a Maryland NAAB accredited architectural degree program during the 2008-2009 school year. Faculty sponsorship with a written letter of recommendation is
required for all submissions. Student submissions will be judged by architect members from AIA North Carolina. Participation is open to all eligible students at no charge.
AIA Maryland will present two $1,000 cash awards to honor and bring attention to the work
created by an architectural student or student team – one graduate and one undergraduate. In addition, the individual or team of the winning projects will receive certificates of recognition.
Awards will be presented at the Design Awards celebration which will be held at Historic London Town & Gardens in Edgewater, Maryland. Each winner, along with one guest, will
receive complimentary tickets to the event.
