Hyattsville Library – Hyattsville, MD
The Hyattsville Branch Library is reinventing itself. Designed for the 21st Century, the new library is imaginatively designed to fit on the site by maximizing green space where the current library and a parking lot exist. Taking advantage of the natural slope, the new one story library is able to offer both main and parking entrances from grade at different levels. The user experience is punctuated by a sense of transparency inserted within architectural forms that are representative of the new and improved services the library is able to offer to the community. These forms, along with an outdoor reading terrace, overlook a preserved and relocated iconic canopy element in the shape of a flying saucer on a landscaped bio-retention garden. This feature reinforces the community’s deference to its past, its present commitment to sustainability and the promotion of optimism through a renewed sense of pride and local identity.

Project Size: 39,000 sf.
